Sister Alice Saunders - Family History Mission in Salt Lake City Jun 1, 2007 - Oct 18, 2008

Alice was called to the Family and Church History Mission in Salt Lake City and started June 1st 2007.

One of her first assignments as a missionary was to write an autobiography for the Mission President. In September of 2007 they published a book of all the missionaries who had entered that mission field from Mar 2007 to Aug 2007.

Biography of Alice Saunders

This is Sister Saunders at her work station in the Ordinance Data Management department of the mission. She was responsible for tracking errors and seeing that they were sent to those authorized to correct them. A typical day was up at 5:15am, she got dressed and ready to go to work at 6:00. It was a short 10 min walk to the Joseph Smith Building from her apartment. Often she would see others coming to work, sometimes some of the General Authorities. She would go up to the 6th floor of the Joseph Smith Building where there was a locked security entrance to the Ordinance Data Management department so she had a special badge that allowed her access to that area due to the security of the data there. For lunch she would often go down to the basement and across the garage to the basement of the Church Office Building where she could go to the Cafeteria. They had a good meal with lots of variety for reasonable prices. Here too she would see General Authorities and other people working in the other buildings. This was her one good meal for the day. Then back to work until about 4:30 when she would go home. She would have an afternoon a week off to go to the Temple or to the Family History Library to do her own research.

Night was not her favorite time of day as it was lonely and her apartment was in the basement so it was sometimes cold. However, she did have friends and sometimes they would make crafts together. There were also three couples from Southern Alberta that she could visit with like Rex and JoAnn Anderson from Barnwell, Ray and Chris Sheen from Taber and Barb VanOrman's brother Darryl and Carol Nielson from Sterling. All these couples were also serving as missionaries there. After she moved to a two bedroom apartment the Anderson's were in her same building.

On weekends she would go shopping for the week if she could find someone to go with. She didn't have a car but people were good to invite her to go with them. She discovered some fun shopping places like NPS where they would buy discount goods to do crafts with or furnish their apartments with or buy clothes. That was her favorite shopping find.

Occaisionally Grandma would bump into Sister Rachel Tan, Meghan's former roommate, who was serving as a Temple square missionary. That was always fun for both of them. Rachel called her grandma and the other senior missionaries were so amazed that she had a "grand daughter" serving there.

This looks like a Christmas party for her district at her apartment. She would often make dinner or cookies for others. Typical Grandma style. She really enjoyed her mission and ther firends she made there.
